The Women of Clydebank
The more women we speak to during this campaign, the more we hear of the amazing work that Clydebank Women's Aid have done in our community. Women have told us of lives saved, families protected and the value of the long term support they received.

This page is dedicated to this work, but also the strength of the women who have came through Clydebank Women's Aid services. We will be uploading an exhibition of Clydebank Women's Aid archives, but in the meantime we welcome testimonials from women and children about their experiences.

"Clydebank Women’s Aid saved countless women’s lives, kept women and kids safe and shone a light on violence against women in Clydebank for 40 years. It’s impossible to put a price on the lives saved and made safer, healthier, better, by CWA. On top of that, It provided feminist education , training, volunteering and employment opportunities for women."

"I wonder what changes the decision makers would need to make in their own lives if they were to take women and girl’s experiences of domestic abuse, sexual assault, rape, sexual harassment and every day sexism seriously. And I wonder if, beneath the refusal to value CWA, is actually a fear of the power that comes from women and girls taking each other’s side, backing each other up, telling each other that they are believed, that they are not worth less than the men and boys that harass and abuse them and that they deserve all of the advantages and privileges that their brothers, fathers and sons enjoy. And when we are doing that, we are a force to be reckoned with."

"I cut my feminist and community work teeth as a teenager with Clydebank Women’s Aid. I grew up a young lesbian feminist in Clydebank in the 1980s and CWA was a haven of sanity for me. Although I wasn’t experiencing domestic abuse, the support, information and friendship I experienced through CWA probably kept me from going down some very self-destructive paths. These unplanned, unintended benefits don’t appear in grant applications or performance indicators. They are the invisible prizes that come from putting women’s experiences and interests front and centre. They come from creating a culture where women’s needs have genuine weight and are valued, cared for and treasured. It is the exact opposite of the culture of West Dunbartonshire Council’s political administration. And part of me wonders if these are the reasons that the they don’t want to support this service model."

"Please come to the Clydebank Women Supporting Women meeting and be a part of the women and girls of this town standing up for each other, saying we are important, that we won’t just accept this and we’re not going away."

Women have been sharing their experiences for many years to develop and protect services for women and children in the future.

In this video, "Dancing in the Kitchen" women describe the impact of Clydebank Women's Aid on their lives.
